"Spirit" Why I Chose That Word

I picked my word, spirit, because I knew that it has many different meanings but I had no idea what most of them could be. It’s a very interesting word that has changed its meaning and connotation over the years. Out of the few words that I was thinking of picking, I finally decided that this one was the one that appealed to me the most. I was also interested in how the word changed from a religious definition to one that is a description of someone’s personality. Spirit is a word that has a very intangible meaning and a word that means something different to different people. I wanted to select this word because, at least for me, it has two very distinct definitions, and I wanted to see how those could connect.

When I think of the word “spirit,” I usually think of another word for energy and an upbeat attitude, as in spirited. I also think of something that you care about, like having school spirit. The problem with defining "spirit" is that it characterizes certain actions and traits by itself, and it's hard to find synonyms to describe what you feel or think in your head. I also think of the more religious meaning, the soul or essence of a person. If I were a Christian, I would probably think of the "Holy Spirit" as part of the Trinity, but I am not. Spirit, in the religious sense, to me means what makes a person that person. I also link the word "spiritual" with the religious form of "spirit." I only know of two definitions or meanings of the word "spirit," but I am sure there are more that stem off of those two or that came before them.
